Embedded Design Example
Inisys Technology Example Projects
This project required the design of not only the circuitry
but the embedded firmware to run this USB based data logger.
The customer wanted a custom hardware design that connected to existing legacy sensors to measure temperature, force and inclination (angle) and logged the data to on-board memory.
The device was to be battery powered and therefore to be low
current. This was achieved using various low power and sleep
states to maximise battery life.
To retrieve the data we offered 2 choices. The first was to
log to and SD card so that this could be removed and taken to a
PC for reading.
The second was to provide a USB cable so that the whole unit
could be connected to a laptop or PC. This was the chosen route
as the entire module was environmentally sealed and it was felt
that the SD card would have compromised the integrity of
the module.
We fitted a sealed USB socket so that the module could be taken off-site to a PC or an engineer could connect on-site using a laptop. The computer saw the logged data as a file on a removable drive so this was easily transferred and no special drivers were required on the computers.
